In the United State there are a multitude of harsh punishments for drug offenders. Drugs are divided into five categories, called schedules, and each has its own penalty, which is dependent upon the quantity of the drug.

Schedule I substances have an elevated potential for abuse, are not currently used for medical purposes, and are unsafe even under the supervision of a medical professional. Some substances that are included in Schedule I are Heroin, Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), Mescaline, Peyote, and Cocaine.

Schedule II substances have an elevated potential for abuse, are currently acceptable in the U.S. for medical purposes with restrictions, and may result in extreme physical or psychological dependence. Some substances that are included in Schedule II are Methamphetamine, Opium, Amphetamine, and Morphine. Schedule II controlled substances are illegal to buy, sell, or possess without a prescription.

Schedule III substance have less potential for abuse than schedule I or II substances, are currently acceptable in the U.S. for medical purposes, and may result in minor physical or psychological dependence. Some substances that are included in Schedule III are Anabolic Steroids and Ketamine.

Schedule IV substances have less potential for abuse than schedule III substances, are currently acceptable in the U.S. for medical purposes, and may result in very minor physical or psychological dependence, compared to schedule III substances. Some substances that are included in Schedule IV are Barbital, Diazepam, and Phenobarbital.

Schedule V substances have very low potential for abuse compared to schedule IV substances, are currently acceptable in the U.S. for medical purposes, and may result in very minor physical or psychological dependence, compared to schedule IV substances.

For legal purposes, a controlled substance is any substance mentioned in the drug schedules.
